I’m Dr. Ashley Steffens, board certified dermatologist, Mom, and outdoor lover.
Helioshield started as a shower thought (I don't know about you, but all my best ideas start in the shower!) I was starting pull out my swimwear for the season and got frustrated thinking about what was in my closet. Nothing fit right, the fabrics felt too hot, and none of the styles made me feel confident.
I realized there was a serious lack of sun protective clothing and swimwear for 30 and 40 something year olds. I didn't want to dress like a teenager but I also didn't want to dress like my Mom (sorry Mom). And I needed something I felt secure in while chasing my 3 year old around.
To make matters worse, options were even more limited for women like me who don't fit in the standard XS-XL size range.
That is why you'll notice that Helioshield is different. Every detail is intentional to make you feel beautiful and comfortable. I've included pockets to stash your stuff, shorts to prevent chafing, and 360 mesh for shaping and comfort; all in a size range not available elsewhere - XS-3X and talls!

Our Story
Helioshield was founded on the belief that sun protection should feel as good as it looks. As a dermatologist, I see firsthand the effects of sun exposure: up to 90% of visible aging (wrinkles, sun spots, thinning skin) is caused by UV radiation, and one in five Americans will face a skin cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. The good news? Much of this is preventable.

Helioshield is committed to preventing skin cancer through innovation, exceptional quality, and listening closely to the needs of our community.
Our Fabrics
At Helioshield, we value the highest level of sun protection, quality, and intention in everything we create. Sourced from Italy, our fabrics are lab tested to block > 98% of the sun's harmful rays. They're breathable and soft enough to wear all day while tough enough to withstand chlorine and laundering. All pieces are carefully and ethically manufactured in Turkey.
What is UPF clothing?
UPF clothing (short for Ultraviolet Protection Factor) refers to apparel that’s specifically designed and tested to block ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) radiation from the sun. It protects your skin from sunburn, skin cancer, and skin aging caused by the sun. You do not need to apply sunscreen to areas of the body that are covered by UPF clothing. You should still apply sunscreen to exposed areas of the body that are not covered by UPF clothing.
The UPF rating measures how much UV radiation (UVA and UVB) can penetrate fabric and reach skin. UPF 50+ means the fabric allows only 1/50th (or 2%) of UV rays to pass through. Meaning 98% of the sun’s rays are blocked. All Helioshield fabrics have a UPF 50+ rating, which is the best UPF rating possible.
